The problem is a lot of these company's don't really care much for the shrimp or you once they have left their warehouse which is a shame, its the main reason why i setup this forum (to help keepers and to help with after sales if needed).

You wouldn't believe how I got the "they who will not be named" to respond, but still ignored my problem.

It's a shame as the shrimp that survived are huge and really active.

Might be because, the water I put them in is a lot better than what they came in. I have a feeling that what they were transported in, was also what they were living in for a long time. As the chunk of poly-filter was really yellow when I got them. I have a feeling that they are wild caught as well.

You may be correct with them being wild caught, I saw some information made by a user of another forum who spoke to a pretty big UK fish and shrimp importer about importing some of these shrimp back several years ago and they were told that evivo had an exclusivity contract setup with Hawaii to be to sole importers or them.. now I don’t know if that still stands or was correct but that makes sense.

Tank 3 is a different issue, I won't add their business name here, (but if you look at the image you'll get the product name and can easily find them using google. You’ll know who they are when you see the same baby tank on their web site). On paper they have a better product than the shrimp world diy ecosystem, as you get 5 Opae vs 3.

I think I'll finish off my intro with the food I feed:

Mainly TetraColor tropical granules - saw a recommendation on a youtube video by L.R.Bretz - only thing he feeds his 200+ tanks of fish and shrimp (not Opae Ula). Had to order them in from the US, as the granuals are not available in the UK.

Have to crush the granules into dust, otherwise the Opae will fight over the big chunks.

I started off with Dennerle CrustaGran Marinus, but now only mix it in every now and then for variety. Again need to turn them into dust or there will be fighting, if they have to share a few whole bits instead of lots of little chunks.

Hikari Crab Cuisine, saw a recommendation on the site a while back, so bought it to try. I only rotate it in every now and then, the Opae don’t seam to go for it as much as the other two.


I prefer the TetraColor granuals as the Opae in tanks 2 but especially 3 will devour everything I give them. I’m not too concerned about the “only feed them what they can eat in a set amount of time” as I only feed them every few days, so can give them a bit more when I do feed them.

For the TetraColor granuals I give say tank 3: about 5 or 6 granuals that I then crush and by the next day there is nothing left. With the CrustaGran and the Crab Cuisine, I might have to pick out the left overs, which is not an easy thing to do.


I’ve also bought some Spirulina powder (bought 100g by BULK POWDERS on amazon - for human consumption as it's cheaper than stuff with just a shrimp food label on it), in prep for the babies and because Odin’s lot in tank 1 seam to be a bit finicky on what they eat.


Actually I originally bought the Opae because I wanted to get back into growing my own Spirulina. After getting the Opae, it dawned on me that I might need a lot more to be able to make a dent on the amount I’m looking to grow.

I have tried CrustaGran Marinus a few times. Although I have not seen the opae ula eat it, it always seems to disappear by the next morning. I think it might be too meaty for regular feeding though, since it is aimed at marine shrimp that are usually more carnivorous than freshwater ones.

I don't think they have any exclusive agreement anymore, as I contacted the seller (in Hawaii) not that long ago. I ended up contacting a bunch of government departments to see what is needed to import the shrimp into the UK (not much).

When I contacted the seller, with the results and suggested a small shipment to start off with. They went quite.

Nearly all the paper work required has to be done at the shippers end (health report by Vet and identification).

On this end, the license to import is free, the hurdle is that they have to be shipped to an entry point where customs (VAT) and health/animal inspection is done.

The problem would be getting all the "ducks in a row" as it were, so that there is no delays and the Opae don't die during the process.

It's been a while.

Baby count is still 5, they are swimming around like tiny adults.

All the berried females no longer have any eggs. Have not seen any more babies in the main tank.

The main female that had more than 10 eggs passed away, a day or so ago. She was swimming upto the surface and then just floating down vertically, she just kept doing that, up and down, up and down. I caught her and put her into a tub by herself - but it didn't help.

I think another Opae had a really bad molt and tore itself apart.

I've only been able to count a maximum of 13 Opae in the main tank.
They are all out, eating off the glass like normal.

Did a water change on Tuesday, on the main tank incase that was the reason for the main female acting strange, while the rest were normal.


Received a single horned Nerite snail this morning (10 May), I’ve placed it in a sort of quarantine tank with old tank water from the main tank.

The goal is to add the Nerite in to the main tank to help clean up the algae off the glass, as it’s been getting to the point where I can’t really see into the tank. My only concern is if the snail cause a problem and I lose the rest of the Opae, so will wait a while before boing anything with it.

The other two tanks are fine and going well. Can't wait for the females in the 3rd tank to become berried. On some of them, the saddle is starting to become bubbly.
