If you cause the water to move - by slightly shaking the tank, if the stuff is not completely stuck to the glass as in it's growing down the glass, then it might just be a bacteria biofilm.
When the water moves, the biofilm will move like very thin tagliatelle pasta being held at the waters edge, with the rest of it moving with the water.
Oh my gosh this totally makes sense!! We moved house a week ago so the tank had to endure a car journey, so the water would definitely have been shaken up!
I'll scoop some out and do a water test to be sure.
On a side note, someone molted yesterday!!! Not sure which one but it was right at the front of the tank. Perfectly formed, and completely see through like a ghost. I thought another one had died!
