I did have one question, which is whether or not I should use the spare sponge filter I have for their tank? I'm used to fish which almost always need filters due to their bioload but I've read some people saying that the opae ula don't like the water movement. It would be hidden behind a rock wall, so I don't know if that changes anything.

Any opinions would be appreciated

I can tell you that Opae Ula are not crazy about water movement. I had a filter in my first tank. It was only on for 30 mins a day. They didn't like it too much... On the other hand if the tank is large enough (Dennis in Hawaii has a large tank with Opae Ula and a pump) it could work. I know you think a tank without a filter goes against my very instinct but it's better not to have one IMHO after setting up my second tank. The Opaes "bioload" is good for the biofilm in the long run. If the tank is not working as planned you could use something like MICROBE LIFT Special Blend. It is my secret weapon. I used it to start my second tank and everything is wonderful. It's just bacteria in a bottle. I put the Opae in from day one - no cycling.
