Hello! I'm Scaredy Shrimp, and I live on the east coast USA.

I don't have any shrimp yet, but I'm moving my fish downstairs and I'd love a low maintenance replacement for them in my bedroom. These little guys seem like a great choice for the empty 10 gallon (about 38 litres) tank that I've had sitting around!

It doesn't seem like many people in the mainland US keep these shrimp outside of the crummy little spheres, so this place has been a great resource for me

I hope to get my shrimp within the next few months so that I can share them with everyone here

Welcome to the forum! I'm glad you are enjoying the forum and if you need any help with the shrimp or tank just put up a post and one of us will help strait away.

Once your tank is setup and ready with shrimp you will only need to top up the evaporated water and that is all! They really are low maintenance and active/fun to watch shrimp that uses the whole water column unlike fresh water shrimp that favor the substrate and plants/rocks mostly.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

These guys definitely seem to be the lowest maintenance aquarium that a person could have while still being fun to watch!

I did have one question, which is whether or not I should use the spare sponge filter I have for their tank? I'm used to fish which almost always need filters due to their bioload but I've read some people saying that the opae ula don't like the water movement. It would be hidden behind a rock wall, so I don't know if that changes anything.

Any opinions would be appreciated

HI!

Sounds nice. Looking forwards to your Opae Ula.

I can tell you that Opae Ula are not crazy about water movement. I had a filter in my first tank. It was only on for 30 mins a day. They didn't like it too much... On the other hand if the tank is large enough (Dennis in Hawaii has a large tank with Opae Ula and a pump) it could work. I know you think a tank without a filter goes against my very instinct but it's better not to have one IMHO after setting up my second tank. The Opaes "bioload" is good for the biofilm in the long run. If the tank is not working as planned you could use something like MICROBE LIFT Special Blend. It is my secret weapon. I used it to start my second tank and everything is wonderful. It's just bacteria in a bottle. I put the Opae in from day one - no cycling.

No I don't think so. It should be the other way around... I use it just like it says in the instructions to kickstart the tank from day one. As I see it one skips the regular cycling (diatom and so on). I will reduce the Special Blend in the next few weeks and will see what happens.
